Uh Oh, A Tax I Like!

Since our government seems hellbent on raising taxes for whatever reason and in doing so passing a judgement off onto a small minority of the community, I have come to conclude that these "Sin Taxes" can be of great value to super moralist people such as myself.

Since "Sin Taxes" are based on one person's judgement of another person's actions and because these taxes have the intent of reducing behaviour by a specific section of the population, I have decided that from now on I will support a "Sin Tax" on abortion, since I don't think people should have abortions. It's a fantastic idea, first of all, we can reduce the ridiculous amount of abortions across the United States by implementing a "Sin Tax" on abortion. We can allocate the money to our children by using that money to pay teachers better, thus providing a better education for the children.

Certainly pro-choicers as well as pro-lifers can see the benefit of it and since most people will never have to have an abortion, this should easily pass. Even most pro-choicers I know consider abortion wrong, but who are they to tell a woman what she can do with her body?

Since "Sin Taxes" do not tell people what they can do with their body, then a "Sin Tax" on abortion would be perfectly acceptable. Since this "Sin Tax" on abortion would benefit the children, only an extremist would oppose this idea. Our children are just to important for extremist to oppose a "Sin Tax" on abortion.

Now, some of you may be concerned how this will affect the poor. Don't worry your pretty little heads off, we'll just make the doctors who perform this responsible for paying the taxes. That makes this tax even better because only the rich will pay this tax. We could make them pay $250 per abortion performed, quickly raising enough money to pay our teachers what they are worth. This won't affect a woman getting an abortion because she won't have to pay the tax.

And for you pro-choicers out there, when you hear a pro-lifer make the charge that abortion is murder, you can then retort, "Those fetuses died for a good cause."

"Sin Taxes" can also be applied to the music industry, and we could use the PMRC as the final arbitrator for which music is sinful. The PMRC was an organization founded by the wife of Al Gore and other wives of Senator. Since the majority of people don't listen to "Sin Music" then this is a tax that can also pass without much opposition, and since it will be for our children, then it must be passed.

Oh, food is sinful. If you eat too much or eat fast food, you too ought to pay a "Sin Tax". Ah, there is no end to this ingenious way of taxing people.

Sin Taxes, you got to love them.

The main problem with your theory of course, is that one man's sin is another man's pleasure. be careful what you wish for. You may find your favorite activities taxed as well. How about a sin tax for golf since the courses divert a large amount of water that could be used for food production? (I play golf...)
Or maybe a sin tax for leaving unneeded lights on, since that wastes electricity.
Taxes to modify behavior may seem a good idea, until its your behavior they come after.

You say that taxing the doctor would mean that the patient doesn't have to pay. that shows a severe misunderstanding of economics. If the doctor is taxed at $250 per abortion, then the cost of performing the abortion rises by $250, therefore that cost must be passed onto the customer by raising the cost of the abortion. This would indeed reduce the number of abortions, but only because you make them more expensive, so indeed, ony those who could afford it would pay, but those that couldn't afford it would simply not be able to have an abortion, meaning another child would be raised in poverty unessesarily.

I seem to have made a mistake in the next to the last sentence. "he may" should have been, She may, sorry.

Good post, and a great idea. I wonder if there would be a way to tax the pro-abortion politicians? I may have told you before, I was born in 1950 to an un-wed Mother and put up for adoption at birth. That should explain my pro-life position. I have a lot of respect for my birth Mother even though I have never meet her. he may have made some mistakes in her life but as far as I know she was not a murderer. As far as I'm concerned abortion is just another word for murder.

God Bless America, God Save The Republic
